The real secret of success is enthusiasm. Yes, more than enthusiasm, I would say excitement. I like to see men get excited. When they get excited they make a success of their lives. Walter Chrysler 1875-1940

Chiropractic Validated by Medical Research

Since Chiropractic’s inception in 1895 there has been an understanding of the crucial relationship between the integrity of the spinal column and the function of the nerve system as a whole and specifically the tissues and organs that they supply. The interrelatedness of the spine and nerve system - even way back then - was evident in its simplest of understandings.

Chiropractors influence the function of the nerve system through the spine and spinal subsystems thereby allowing the body to increase its own inborn ability to self-regulate and self-heal.

Why Don’t M.D.s Recognize the Importance of Nerve Function?
"Why didn’t my M.D. tell me that?" Who knows. Maybe these understandings were firstly and continue to be associated with Chiropractic and chiropractors. Their bias professionally is that chiropractic ideas have not come from any medical research or any allopathic physician and therefore are not valid.

Well, hold on; here is some research that is medical and allopathic.

The  Winsor Autopsies
Henry Winsor, a medical doctor in Haverford, Pennsylvania, asked the question:

"Chiropractors claim that by adjusting one vertebra, they can relieve stomach troubles and ulcers; by adjusting another, menstrual cramps; and by adjusting others conditions such as kidney diseases, constipation, heart disease, thyroid conditions, and lung disease may resolve--but how?"

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Winsor was inspired by chiropractic and osteopathic literature to experiment. He planned to dissect human and animal cadavers to see if there was a relationship between any diseased internal organ discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae associated with the nerves that went to the organ. The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies he dissected a total of 75 human and 22 cat cadavers. The following are Dr. Winsor’s results:

"Two hundred twenty-one structures other than the spine were found diseased. Of these, 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature. Nine diseased organs belonged to different sympathetic segments from the vertebrae out of line.
These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide ... for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments and several organs may be supplied with sympathetic (nerve) filaments from the same spinal segments. In other words, there was nearly a 100 percent correlation between minor curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs."

Diseases examined:

  • Stomach Diseases
All nine cases of spinal misalignment in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9) had stomach disease.
  • Lung Disease
All 26 cases of lung disease had spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic spine.
  • Liver Disease
All 13 cases of liver disease had misalignments in the mid thoracic  (T5-T9)
  • Gallstones
All five cases with gallstone disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic.
  • Pancreas
All three cases with pancreas disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracics.
  • Spleen
All 11 cases with spleen diseases had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracics.
  • Kidney
All 17 cases with kidney disease were out of alignment in the lower thoracics.
  • Prostate and Bladder Disease
All eight cases with kidney, prostate and bladder disease had the lumbar (L2-L3) vertebrae misaligned
  • Uterus
The two cases with the uterine conditions had the second lumbar misaligned.
  • Heart Disease
All 20 cases with heart and pericardium conditions had the upper five thoracic vertebrae (T1-T5) misaligned.

Dr. Winsor’s results are published in The Medical Times, November 1921, and are found in any medical library.
That’s right, folks: 1921.

Eating Fish Slows Progression of Plaque Buildup in Arteries

Eating plenty of fish oil, which is rich in omega-3, is known to cut the risk of heart disease and death. Now researchers have found that eating fish significantly reduces the progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis (the build-up of plaques in the arteries) among women who already have coronary artery disease. So not only is the omega-3 in fish useful for preventing heart disease, but it appears to slow the progression of it as well.

It's important to mention that eating a lot fish is risky due to all of the contamination concerns, but it is so important to get omega-3 in your diet from fish oil. Cod liver oil is not only high in omega-3, but it is an excellent source of vitamin D.

Back Ache and Pregnancy

Few women manage to escape some sort of backache during their pregnancy or in the first years as a mother.
The reasons for these pains are easily explained and often easy to treat with Chiropractic care.

At around 10 weeks, a hormone called relaxin is produced which has the effect of softening and loosening the ligaments (which hold the joints together). The role of this is to allow the joints of the pelvis to expand to allow for the growing baby. Weight gain and the expanding abdomen inevitably cause changes in posture, increasing the curve of the lower back and thereby putting stress on the joints. The stability of the lower back and pelvis depends greatly on the lower stomach muscles which are stretched during pregnancy. The Pelvic floor muscles are also weaker due to the increase in pressure on them and, to the hormonal changes. These muscles also have a role in the stability around the pelvis. The sacro-iliac joints are located at the back of the pelvis on each side

Chiropractic care during and following pregnancy will relieve most problems associated with these changes. You can enhance your chiropractic care at home with some simple stretching. Ask your doctor of chiropractic if these exercises are good for you.

Stretches for the muscles that become tight due to the changing posture:

Hamstrings
Lie on your back with both knees bent up. Bend one hip to 90° and hold the thigh in this position. Slowly, straighten the knee until a stretch is felt at the back of the thigh. Sustain this stretch for 30 seconds.

Buttocks
Lie on your back with both knees bent up. Put one heel on the opposite knee and pull your thighs up towards you. You should feel a stretch in the buttock. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Front of thigh
Stand holding onto a table and bend one knee up behind you, holding onto the foot. Push your hips forward so you feel a stretch down the front of the thigh. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Maintain the mobility of the lower back
Lie on your back with both knees bent, feet on the floor. Pull your lower stomach in, then push the small of your back into the floor, hold for a few seconds then gently arch your back (rocking the pelvis). This exercise can be performed in the cat position (on all fours) when the pelvis can also be rotated around. Rocking the pelvis in sitting, is good for loosening the back before you stand up.

Bradley classes are helpful with these and many other pregnancy concerns, as well as preparing for the birth process.

Vitamin D: Myth vs Reality

The debate between dermatologists and experts on vitamin D has reached scorching proportions. Further controversy was ignited after Dr. Holick, one of the most distinguished experts on vitamin D, was forced to resign from his position at the Boston University Medical School after releasing a book supporting the benefits of moderate sun exposure and downplaying the risks of skin cancer. These debates have added to the confusion of the public and prompted questions such as:

  • "How much sun is considered safe?
  • "What kind of benefits does vitamin D offer?"
  • "Why not just get the benefits from a supplement?"

For years, vitamin D has been looked upon as essential for healthy bones. One of the key roles of vitamin D is its ability to help absorb calcium in the small intestine. The people who fall in the vitamin deficient category are only able to absorb a mere third to half as much calcium as those who receive sufficient amounts. People deficient in vitamin D are then prone to two types of bone diseases. Adults are at risk of osteoporosis, a loss of bone density and ostomalacia, a softening of the bone. Children on the other hand are at risk of rickets, softening of the bones.

The latest vitamin D research has shown that it has the ability to fight off several diseases such as colon, breast and prostate cancers. Although this research hasn't been conclusive it has given researchers much promise.

It has also been discovered that vitamin D also helps prevent specific autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition to providing protection against these diseases it also has the potential to play an anti-inflammatory role in the body.

The consensus among vitamin D experts is that getting moderate UVB exposure without sunscreen holds the answer to maintaining adequate blood levels. The exceptions, of course, would be those with the history of skin cancer or sensitivities to the sun. Their theory behind getting your vitamin D intake from the sun is that most people don't eat enough salmon and drink enough milk to fulfill their vitamin D requirement.

Experts recommend that just getting small increments of sun exposure each day would supply a person with the adequate amount of vitamin D production. They also stated the difficulty of placing an exact time amount of sun exposure per person because of factors such as season, time of day and the amount of skin exposed.
